Our experienced electrical staff at BSI is capable of providing full service Electrical Engineering and Design including power and control. We provide detailed engineering and design for new facilities, or modifications to existing facilities, as well as cost estimating, construction support, construction management and startup support. With diversified experience in the pharmaceutical, bio-fuels, chemical, plastics and food industries, we have the technical capability to successfully complete projects for a wide range of clients. We have worked on all phases of a project from conceptual and definition through design and start-up. Our staff has collectively been involved in more than 35 startups, totaling nearly four years worth of startup experience with over two years worth of construction management as well. Our team has worked successfully on projects as small as $2000 and as large as $280,000,000 total installed cost (TIC). Our engineering tools allow us to cost effectively execute very small or very large projects.
Our staff brings to a project a diverse background of design and manufacturing experience. A significant portion of our staff has direct “in-plant” experience in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries. Our team averages nearly twenty five years of experience in Electrical/Instrumentation and Control Engineering design, and includes over 72 total years of manufacturing environment experience. This blend of individuals provides a unique perspective that separates us from the typical Engineering firm. We not only design your system to be cost effectively installed, but we also design your system to be cost effectively operated and maintained.
Specialties
- Short circuit/arc flash studies using EDSA software. The studies ensure equipment short circuit ratings are correct and proper PPE is identified at switchboards, motor control centers and power distribution panels. These studies result in your plant being in compliance with NFPA 70E Arc Flash Electrical Safety Requirements
- Design of intelligent motor control centers
- Medium and low voltage power distribution, including on site power generation
- Power monitoring systems for utility management
- Correction of power factor and power quality issues
- Fire alarm design
- Electrical and Instrumentation installations in electrically hazardous areas per NEC/NFPA requirements. These areas included Class I (vapor), Class II (dust) and Class III (fibers/flying) environments. The compliance methods include explosion proof, purging, non-incendive and intrinsically safe.
- Electrical installations in pharmaceutical clean-room areas
- For critical retrofit projects we utilize internally developed job scheduling tools to plan transition and startup activities that minimize the interruption of production
- Standards Development including AutoCad standards, design and installation standards, Standard Operating Procedures and maintenance standards
BSI Recent Project Experience
- Numerous process projects at an existing ethanol facility. Electrical work involved the design and installation of electrical power distribution, motor controls and lighting.
- Numerous projects as on-site engineers at a chemical facility, responsible for determining the power requirements and developing motor control and process control requirements, then managing the construction and startup. Several of the areas were electrically hazardous, Class I, Division 2.
- Numerous process projects at chemical facilities. Electrical work involved the design and installation of electrical power distribution, motor controls, lighting and special grounding requirements. Several of the areas were electrically hazardous, Class I, Divisions 1 and 2.
- Design of a new furnace system at an aircraft parts manufacturing facility. Electrical work involved the design and installation of electrical power distribution, motor controls, heat-tracing, and special grounding requirements.
- Numerous process projects at a bulk pharmaceutical facility, focusing on clean room and hazardous area applications. Work involved engineering / design and installation of process equipment. Performed electrical power study and modifications to existing medium voltage distribution systems including installation of emergency generators to support process during a power outage. Performed short circuit / arc flash studies to ensure equipment short circuit rating was correct and proper PPE was identified when work was required at switchboards, motor control centers and power distribution panels. Project also included installation of power transformers, switchboards, motor control centers, lighting, fire alarm and communications.
- Design of several controls retrofit projects in the pharmaceutical, chemical and textile fibers industries. These projects were implemented with minimal affects on production by the use of a detailed plan.
- Design, construction support and commissioning of many grass roots facilities in the food, bio-fuels, chemical, pharmaceutical and consumer products industries.
